He Gui works for the Gu Clan and is a trusted aid of Gu Heng that started using his position to embezzle Spiritual Stones. He would then travel to the nearby Mingshan Stronghold and spend generously on alcohol and women.[1]

Somehow, Gu Bei heard about He Gui's embezzlement and decided to use this knowledge to blackmail and bribe him into turning traitor on Gu Heng. While at a brothel, He Gui was approached by Gu Bei, Nie Li, Lu Piao, and Li Xingyun and offered two thousand spiritual stones every time he reports on Gu Heng's location. While if he refuses, Gu Bei will let Gu Heng find out about the embezzlement.[1]

Not having much choice in the matter, He Gui agreed with the condition that they help him pull down another of Gu Heng's aids, Chai Yue. Chai Yue had never gotten alone with him and he wished to bring him down a bit. Gu Bei agreed to this and planned on framing Chai Yue as the traitor. Before leaving, He Gui wrote letters implicating himself at Gu Bei's request and then was given two thousand spiritual stones. Though he had not agreed completely willingly, he still also was very pleased with the amount of spiritual stones.[2]

He kept up with his side of the deal and provided Gu Bei with Gu Heng's location several times, allowing them to ambushed and kill him. Since Chai Yue had either safely escaped or not been present during these attacks, He Gui had successfully made Gu Heng start to distrust him. On top of that, He Gui had also been bad mouthing Chai Yue in front of Gu Heng, further lowering his opinion of him.[3]

He Gui was with Gu Heng and Chai Yue when they discovered that the Heiyun Deity’s Lake had been destroyed by Nie Li's troops. When He Gui suggested heading to the Guyu Deity’s Lake, Chai Yue said that he thought they should head to the more distant Lightning Deity’s Lake. Much to his glee, Gu Heng decided to choose He Gui's suggestion. This was further proof that Gu Heng no longer trusted Chai Yue.[3]
